They're Here!

They're finally here! The Winexpert 2007 Selection Limited Edition kits have been announced, and it's a doozy of a line-up. I'm touring around telling our retail partners about them, and tonight we're making a video of the presentation (how am I going to explain that I don't show up on film . . . ?).

The varieties are pretty distinct, and I think they're all going to be wonderful wines when they're ready to drink. The easiest to love of the reds is probably the Chilean Carmenere/Cabernet, an encore wine that was so popular we brought it back. It's got the richness of fruit and bountiful soft tannins that beg for a grilled steak, or just a quiet evening. The Nero d'Avola/Shiraz is going to be great: smooth, fully developed tannins and the Shiraz fruit (I always smell blueberries in Shiraz) and the Brunello is going to be long, very tannic, with bright cherry and firm acid--a grand food wine that will age out over a long period. We're sampling Brunellos with chunks of parmigiano reggiano cheese and it's going over very well.

The whites are a cool switch-up: the Australian Riesling, from the Riverlands, is dry. It shows off a mineral character and a heavy, almost 'oily' texture, rich in the mouth with a long finish. It's a fantastic food wine. The Pacific Quartet marries four grapes from the Pacific Rim: Vidal from BC, Gewurztraminer from Washington, Chenin from California and Muscat Canada from Australia--together they make a wonderfully zesty, off-dry wine that is gulpably delicious.

I'm off to another presentation--last night was Kelowna and a great group there (the poor vegetarians--I tried to talk s l o w l y for them . . .) and a good time was had by all. Now it's Coquitlam and our retail partners from around the lower mainland--most of them are old friends, which is good, because I don't change the jokes in my presentation, and it's important that they know when to laugh.

More from the road!
