I Have the Best Friends Ever

Friday night in the Greenwood Inn in Winnipeg--300 people!

Wrapped up a great week in Manitoba with a really fun event in Winnipeg. We got the boot from the Blue and Gold room for Friday (something about some football team needing it, go figure!) and wound up in the fabulous Greenwood Inn. Not only did they step into the breach at the last minute, they were great with a busy and wacky event. Not only was this a very appreciative crowd (they laughed at my jokes, which means they were smart and cool too!) but they were really eager to talk wine and food and winemaking, which makes for a perfect evening for me.

One of my favorite things that evening was running into a fellow named Gary. He's been coming to the events for years (glutton for punishment, or short memory?) and we've talked about wine together many times. Last year I was moaning that I was out of the 2006 Limited Edition Mosel Valley Riesling, and that I wish I had just one more bottle, so this year Gary showed up with a beautiful little box, just the right size . . . with a bottle of his Riesling in it! What a guy! I carefully coddled that bottle home, and it's waiting in my wine rack for the middle of December when I'm home and can sit down and enjoy it.

Gary also had the honour of getting in the funniest joke of the night: every year I make a joke about how long we want people to age our wines, claiming that I'm going to invent the 'carboy straw', for people who can't even wait to bottle their wines. Guess who showed up with a whole rack of carboy straws!

See why I like Winnipeg so much? The people are some of the nicest, warmest and most friendly in the country. Sure it's a little nippy sometimes, and when it's not, the mosquitos are like 747's with teeth, but I can't wait to go back again next year--thanks to the folks at Wine Sense for bringing me out, and thanks to everyone who came out for the tasting. Same time, same place!
