Meet the Tim, Take Two

Is that a Cheval Blanc in your pocket, or are you thirsty to see me?

Whew! It has been a busy weekend/week for Technical Services. My lecture at the Fermenter's Guild conference was a bunch of fun, if a bit intense (sorry for the technical jargon everyone!). I think not a few people were surprised to find out that under objective judging standards a glass of water scored more points on the UC Davis rating scale than a bottle of wine costing fourteen bucks!

Today I'm off to North Vancouver to do a consumer tasting event for my pal Brad at Valley Estates.

Come on in!

We're just across the street from his store at Cheers, and we'll be doing a wine and food pairing event with Sonoma Cab, Pinot Noir and Unoaked Chardonnay, as well as Napa Merlot and Washington Pinot Gris. I know these are all from our Selection Estate Series line-up, but we'll actually be tasting commercial equivalents of the wines, instead of consumer-produced kit product.

Why? Because it's an excise-tax thing. We can never, ever, under any circumstances whatsoever, give someone wine made from a kit, even for educational purposes. Instead, we take a page from the commercial industry, pair food with commercial wines, go to the gubmint liquor store and pay up. That way everyone gets to try the wine, I get to talk about regions, flavours and foods, and people can decide if they want to try making that for themselves--not a bad thing all around.

I'll report on the event tomorrow, along with the food pairings and reactions. Now, if only this terrible cold will hold off long enough to let me speak!
