Is that an adze in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?
I originally wanted to title this entry, 'Eric Asimov is a Nut', but that's not fair to him. After all, being a nut never hurt me in my job, so it probably isn't inhibiting him either. But I couldn't help but grunt and howl while I read The Pour today, 'Does Your Wine Need Viagra?'. It's one of those blogs that bears watching--he's a thoughtful and experienced bibber with some interesting insights. Usually.

This logo makes me thirsty
I'm back from Portugal! It was a great three days in the Douro, which I'll detail next week sometime when I have a chance to upload some of the 400 pictures I took. I will say that the scenery is beautiful beyond belief, however cruising around mountain sides in a hot-rod Peugot is one thing, but doing it on a one-lane road over sheer drops of thousands of feet and no guardrails and oncoming trucks whipping around at breakneck speeds is completely another.

Rolling out the barrels
What a great day yesterday. It actually started Thursday, when we were hanging out on the banks of the Douro river, looking across at all the Port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia (the south side of the river in Porto) and we ran into Colin from Winesense! He and his lovely girlfriend Suzanne are vacationing in Portugal, and we were supposed to meet on Saturday, but it just so happened that in a bustling modern city of hundreds of thousands of people he was standing only a few metres away from me.

Running all the way from Spain to the Atlantic, the Douro is the heart of Porto
It's been an eventful couple of days hitting the bricks in and around Porto. We've only managed a little bit of the city for sightseeing, but made up for it by going to a cork factory and getting an insider's tour of the Taylor's Port lodge.

Port wine, and all this beauty too? What's the catch?
Greetings from Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, 2005 cultural capital of Europe, and one of the most romantically storied wine cities in the world. We toured around Lisbon yesterday and came up here today, in the midst of a terrific downpour--rain like a cheap movie effect, coming down in sheets and buckets. It's supposed to last at least another day, so darn!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day
Lisbon! City on the river Tagus, capital of Portugal, home to over 3 million people and host to a long and amazing history in a country of wine and men of the sea. We've only been here one day and managed a small walk, but the architecture and the people are equal--amazing, easy on the eyes and very welcoming to a traveller.

It takes a villa to raise a criança
I'll be stepping out for a couple of weeks, taking my lovely wife on a well-earned vacation. It may seem a funny time for time-off, but I have to cram it in when I can: my schedule gets a little busy in the next few months. Luckily we don't have children, so we're able to go after spring break and beat a few of the crowds.

You got me where you want me
I ain't nothing but your fool
You treated me mean yeah
Oh you treated me cruel
Fantasia Barrino's immortal lyrics (Aretha didn't write those words, she just owns them) say it all--foolin' is good cruel fun. My little jape on the 1st was mellow enough, but there are some really hilarious ones out in the inter-tubes. A quick round-up:

I agree. Why does every wine have to have oak in it? I tried a friend's Pinot Noir which he made from a kit and it tasted great. I ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir at a restaurant at our anniversary and all I could taste was oak. What the h*&$!!!

I did an experiment with my Limited edition Pacific Quartet. During the last stage of Racking for about a month, I separated my batch into 2 3-gallon Carboys, one just letting it clarify before filtering then bottling, and the other I added a 1in by 12 inch oak strip. It made two different wines. One naturally more crisp while the other that had the Oak was a fuller bodied. I had one of my local wine "experts" taste both, she loved both and loved the two styles. don
