Facing Up to It

Tarnation! In my day, computers were steam-powered, and we had to
post pictures to facebook by pony-express, both ways uphill!

I already spend a lot of time on the Internet. I think it's the series of tubes that fascinates me, or perhaps it's the fact that somewhere out there I just know there's a cat doing something funny, and I haven't lol'ed at it yet.

But I resisted joining facebook for a long time. Young whippersnappers and their social-networking sites. In my day we had BBS's and 720 baud modems (hint for the kids: even if you could display that image of the cat wearing a funny hat, it would take between six and eight months to load0 and I already moderate at winepress.us and noodle around at winemakermag.com, decanter, Alice Feiring's blog, and Tom Wark's Fermentation along with two or three dozen other sites I visit every week. Who has more time?

Me, it turns out. There's a new site on facebook, vintner's@home, dedicated to spreading the fun and joy of consumer-produced wine. But the only way to get on is to set up a profile, so there I am. I think this qualifies me as a very late adopter but I'm alright with it. I've never been too sure this internets thingy is going to last anyway.

I've already found a bunch of my winemaking pals there and it's just getting started. I like the idea of sharing knowledge and doing some personal wine networking, so if you're interested come on over and join us.

We'll save a spot--and a glass--for you.
