Only One Porto In a Storm

Port wine, and all this beauty too? What's the catch?

Greetings from Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, 2005 cultural capital of Europe, and one of the most romantically storied wine cities in the world. We toured around Lisbon yesterday and came up here today, in the midst of a terrific downpour--rain like a cheap movie effect, coming down in sheets and buckets. It's supposed to last at least another day, so darn!

Something I didn't know about Portugal is how good the food is here: yesterday I had a plate of prawns, whole and head-on that was the best of any seafood I have ever eaten. I ate about a half-kilo with dabs of fresh garlicky mayonnaise and would have eaten much more if my fish hadn't arrived. And the wine, oh my, effortless, carefree whites so aromatic, fresh and crisp! And like no varietal I've ever tasted before.

Hey, it's time for dinner! Perhaps tomorrow we will get to some Port lodges, and have a little drink. Strictly research, you know . . .
