Seeing Fred

Before you criticise someone, walk a mile in their shoes.
That way you'll be a mile away from them, and they won't have any shoes.
Well, every day can't be April Fool's: some days you've got to hit the pavement. Wednesday I'll be on the road seeing my old friend Fred (he's not that old, really!) at Fred's Wines. Fred's been in the Wine On Premise industry for years and he's the sort of guy who you don't mind just dropping in on to catch up. I haven't seen his Langley location yet, so I'm looking forward to it.
Langley is an interesting case: the birthplace of British Columbia, it was the early capital of BC when the Hudson's Bay opened up a fur trading post at Fort Langley on the mighty Fraser River (Simon Fraser hadn't canoed downriver yet, so at the time it was called 'Derby Reach'. Old joke: why did Simon Fraser canoe down the River? Because not even a bloody salmon can go up it!). While the bucolic farmland and woods are more and more quickly giving away to strip malls and medium-density housing, it's still a place of quiet backroads and hills, great for a summer's bike ride. But it's not all quiet lanes: the world's premier Ukelele ensemble hails from there--and it doesn't get any better than that.
