Those Medalling Kids

State Fair? Like Rogers and Hammerstein judged my wine?

Does this mean I get a smooch from Ann Margaret?

The results from the 2008 Indiana State Fair International Wine Competition are in, and Winexpert did pretty well. It's hard to say how many medals folks won with our kits, as the Indy results list only varietals, not kit material, but I recognise rather a lot of our proprietary kit names (like Castellina) in the mix.

Is everybody here drinking Tim's wine?

What is easier to tot up are the results for the wines I entered. It looks like out of 108 wines entered I took over 100 medals, including two double-golds, nine golds and more than 40 silver and 40 bronzes. Holy smokes!

I enter competitions when I can because I need an objective assessment of the wines we make. It's one thing to taste them and pat myself on the back, but a blind tasting by qualified judges really tells you something about the actual quality of your wine.

Some folks might be confused that I'm entering an amateur competition, but the fact is, I've never been paid to make wine--I'm not an eonologist, a chemist, a lab technician or anything associated with pro winemaking. Also, I always make the kit according to the instructions (after all, I wrote them). The only modifications that I make are to filter most of my wines (I'm a big believer in filters and filtering as a quality enhancer) and I properly age the wine before entering it. All of my stuff is at least one year old, and some it three, four and five years. Time is definitely the magic ingredient for enhancing wine.

Congratulations to everyone who entered, and also to the team at Winexpert who work together to make great kits, so that I can make great wine.
