Happy New Year

Coffee, the most important meal of the day for a Santa Claus in training

The Annual White Rock Polar Bear Swim was a success. My pal David couldn't swim, as he came down with a rotten cold at the last minute, but he did show up to take pictures for me, which does show a lot of fortitude. It was one of the coldest swims I can remember--less than 2ºC out there!

Note rescue boat in background. Probably wise planning.

One of the nifty things about doing this year after year (other than confirming that I don't seem to be able to learn from experience) is meeting old friends. These two ladies come every year to get a picture with 'Kilt Guy'. Of course you can see the one on the left averting her eyes when she realises I've morphed into 'Speedo Dude'.

She said she left her golden lasso in her invisible airplane.

Wonder Woman (Lisa, actually) lives just up the street from me. She truly is a woman of steel to brave those waters!

Finally, after all the photo ops and the hilarity, it was time to go in. There aren't any pictures of me entering the water, because apparently I covered 100 yards in under seven seconds. It was cold.

Oh, the huge manatee!

Note the delighted expression of the woman on the left. Brr!

Finally it was all over for another year, and I shuffled off home, where I had thoughtfully set up the hot tub. Really, the prospect of a hot soak is the only way I can con myself into doing something this silly every year. Well, that and a wee nip to toast the first day of the new year.

I'd have to characterise that as a pretty limited talent pool . . .

Why does my hot tub look suspiciously like a kiddie pool someone filled with hot water? Just one of those mysteries, I guess. I hope everyone has a safe, prosperous and happy new year, with lots of exhilarating plunges and warm recoveries.

Well, it's back to my Brian Tracy exercise for 2009 goal-setting. Top of my list for '09 is not falling into ice-cold water over my head. You have to start somewhere.
