Fight Cancer, One Beer At a Time

Sounds like a good trade to me

It's not often you get to do something good that's in your own self interest, both coming and going. For the month of June, in honor of Father's Day, Winexpert will be donating $1 from every Barons Beer Kit sold to Pints for Prostates.

Pints for Prostates is a grassroots campaign that uses the universal language of beer to reach men with an important health message. Founded by prostate cancer survivor Rick Lyke in 2008, the campaign raises awareness among men about the need for regular health screenings and PSA testing by making appearances at beer festivals, social networking and pro bono advertising.

According to cancer.ca,

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian men (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). In 2011:

  •
    • An estimated 25,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 4,100 will die of it.
    • On average, 70 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer every day.
    • On average, 11 Canadian men will die of prostate cancer every day.

One in 7 men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime (the risk is highest after age 60) and one in 28 will die of it.

Chances are you already know someone who has been affected by prostate cancer. The good news is, that with early detection and treatment, outcomes are excellent. The trick is getting men to get PSA tests and screening. It's not even a very comfortable subject for most guys, getting 'The Exam'. But the thought of skipping available screening . . . would you rather die of embarrassment?

In order to break through this wall of discomfort, Pints for Prostates tricks men into associating testing with something really good--BEER! (Such simple creatures we are). I think that's an excellent idea, so at Winexpert we're going to pitch in. Go to any authorised Winexpert Retailer in the month of June and buy a Baron's beer kit, and in addition to giving you a great beer you can make yourself, we'll donate a dollar to the cause.

Really, how can you lose?

This is very timely stuff for me: in my own family my Uncle Cornelius had it and was treated successfully, and a very dear friend of the family has been diagnosed recently. We're pulling for him, but it takes more than positive thinking to help all the men who will get prostate cancer. If you're a man over the age of 40, get tested. If you're not a man, but you love one, make him get tested--if he's shy, you can always try beer as an inducement.
