Wine and the Mind

Hiya Joe!

Wine: is there nothing it can't make better? According to a study done at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, wine may protect against dementia. The study was a long-term population study began in 1968. According to their findings,

Thirty-four years after the first study, 162 women had been diagnosed with dementia. The results show that among those women who reported that they drank wine a considerably lower proportion suffered from dementia, whereas this correlation was not found among those who had reported that they regularly drank beer or liquor.

“The group that had the lowest proportion of dementia were those who had reported that the only alcohol they drank was wine,” says Professor Lauren Lissner, who directs the study in collaboration with Professor Ingmar Skoog, both with the Sahgrenska Academy.

Two things: first, the university is very reluctant to endorse wine consumption as a health measure, and I have to go along with that: there are enough good reasons to enjoy wine that you don't need to pump it up as a pharmaceutical!

Second, I love that professor's name, 'Skoog'. It's probably pronounced all boring in Swedish, like 'Scahg', but if I knew him I'd call him 'Skoogy Doo'.

I'm not going to run out and start drinking more wine than I already do, but I know I'm going to continue to feel great about it, if it can help keep me sharp as I age. I need all the help I can get.
