A Sea of Pink

Regular or de-caf? Photo by Phillip Chin: http://www.chinphoto.com

One of the questions I often get asked is, "How can I become as cool as you, Tim?" Okay fine, so I actually never get asked that question. But at every lecture, tasting or seminar I've given, people have asked how they could learn more about wine.

Think PInk

Say, you come here often?

Yep, that's a picture of me. I have a good excuse for the kilt: I was golfing at our last company tournament, and I have nice legs. The best thing about golf is that it lets someone of my age and gender play dress-up like a colour-blind fashion-zombie.

Climate Change, Grapes and Technology

Hot enough for ya?

Ever since Al Gore and the IPCC invented climate change it's all you hear about in the news. And so it should be, as it's going to radically change the world we know into something completely different. As the sage once said, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." And it'd be a shame to miss what's happening in the World Climate Change and Wine conference going on in Barcelona now, because between short-sighted wineries, clueless reporters, self-serving techno-fetishists and The Great Satan, it's more or less a circus, minus the elephants.

Lupercalia and the Food of Love

Dance! Dance! In your little goat-pants!

It may come as a surprise to those who know me as the gruff-but-loveable nerd of wine, but I'm an incurable romantic. Not that I've ever searched for a cure, having found my true love early and stalked her with the cunning and guile of a panther. As a consequence of being filled with the joy of a long and happy marriage, I look forward to anniversaries, birthdays and romantic holidays. Lupercalia is just about one of my favorites.

Cibolla . . . Eldorado . . . Babylon . . . VEGAS!

It was a nice little place, very quaint and charming. I'd probably stay there again.

A quick wrap-up of our Vegas event: we went to participate in a surprise for my pal Craig (co-owner of Winesense in Manitoba). His girlfriend Wendy arranged for a 40th birthday party for him in Vegas with a bunch of friends. Well, because it always has to be about him, he managed to propose to her the morning of his birthday, completely unaware of the upcoming festivities. What a glorious concatenation of events!

Noble Prize

Noble indeed!

Winexpert Retailer Honoured by Business Community.

Peter Mills, Winexpert Halifax

It's not everyday that we're honoured by our peers, at least not for me, so I thought it only fitting to pass on some recognition received by Noble Grape, a Winexpert retailer with five stores in Halifax, N.S. and one in Fredericton, N.B.

Every year, the Halifax Chamber of Commerce and the Globe and Mail newspaper combine to honour Halifax businesses in one of four categories: New Business of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Business of the Year, and Business Person of the Year. The selection process is quite rigorous, requiring nomination by an outside party, letters of recommendation, and judging by a selection committee. Over 100 entries were received in each of the four categories. These are narrowed down to 20 finalists in each category. Of the 20 finalists, 5 from each category are short-listed for recognition at the annual awards banquet held at the Halifax World Trade and Convention centre.

Wine Labeling

The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away

Labeling is a different kettle of fish for commercial winemakers than it is for wine kit companies. While they have to contend with approvals for their pictures, AVA designations, wine names and things like sulphite and alcohol warnings on their labels, they've never had to account for the actual content of their bottles. By contrast Winexpert is considered a food processing company, so we've always had to list the contents of our kits, including grape juice, concentrate, bentonite, yeast, etc.

Vegas, Baby

Viva!

I'm off to Las Vegas, Nevada. This is my first trip to the city of sin and sensation, and I'm really looking forward to soaking in the iniquity and the dining. I've already got reservations for Thomas Keller's Bouchon in the Venetian and Wolfgang Puck's Spago in Caesar's, and the missus is talking about Olives in the Bellagio.

En Primeur: A Scam?

Ouch, that stings!

So if you've been following the saga of backlash against 'spoofulated' wines, or the backlash against the backlash, you might be wondering, 'Who is responsible for wines that taste like generic jam-and-vodka?'. Is it the sugarlogged palate of Robert Parker? Is it ex-cathedra pronouncements? Is it Promethian technology run amuck?
